About us The association Les Amis de la Bastide was founded by Louis de Beauvallon in 1993. Its aim was not only to preserve the heritage of the bastide of Sauveterre but also, more broadly, to take an interest in everything to do with maintaining popular traditions. Thus the Association searched for items, documents and oral recollections concerning the town, with the result that we now have considerable archive material in addition to the two key items that survive from the past: the Town Charter, a 13th century parchment, and the 14th century seal, which was used for official documents. In recent years, the Association has diversified its field of research, producing specialised, heritage-related publications about the region: a general history of the English bastide founded in 1281 by Edward I, King of England and Duke of Aquitaine, studies on the town’s ancient wells and cellars, and surveys of the canton’s roads, places of worship and pilgrimage in the Entre-deux-Mers, and castles, fortified houses, mansions and fortified mills in the canton of Sauveterre. The most recent publication is a monograph on the village of Castelviel. The Association has also organised cafés-philos (lecture-debates) and spring concerts. On the occasion of the national heritage days in September, we organise attic sales, antique sales and a painters’ festival. The season closes with a book fair in October.
